What if I Suspect I have a Disability?
Disability Screening Request
The following service is restricted to currently enrolled Texas State students only.
The screening process offered by the ODS includes the following steps:
Step 1: Complete the online pre-screening questionnaire.
Step 2: Wait to be contacted by an ODS specialist for further instructions.
Step 3: A follow-up meeting may be scheduled by the ODS, if a full screening is determined to be necessary.
The information obtained from the following pre-screening will be used to determine eligibility and necessity of a face-to-face screening interview. At the conclusion of this online request, a staff member from the ODS will review the information in the order it is received and will contact the student through their secure Texas State e-mail account with additional information. It is important to note that the ODS is only authorized to complete screening interviews and any additional need for testing that may be deemed necessary will be the responsibility of the student, not the university. Further information on disability testing will be available through the ODS, as needed.
A significant number of students who seek assistance from the Office of Disability Services (ODS) do not have past history of a learning disability or other disability that may impair learning. Most students relate a history of low grades, long hours of studying and high frustration levels. Upon determination of eligibility, an ODS staff member will complete a face-to-face screening interview with the student.
The screening may cover many areas of learning including history of testing, standardized test scores, retention, distractibility, concentration, dominant language, high school experience, family history, socioeconomic factors, traumatic family events, serious illnesses or injury, history of resource or remedial classes, and/or general questions about emotional history.
The information gathered in this pre-screening, and any additional information thereafter, is held under strict confidentiality. The ODS does not release any student documentation or records, unless otherwise officially requested by the student. There is also no record made of a student receiving services from the ODS on a student’s academic transcript.
